FREELANCE SENIOR DESIGNER
Modern Nest Homes is the design division within the Modern Nest brand, focused on designing both private
client homes and internally-designed specification homes which reflect the signature style of Modern Nest.
Modern Nest Homes is growing rapidly and we are seeking an additional Freelance Senior Designer. Reporting
to the Design Director, the Senior Designer serves as the creative and project management lead on all phases
of high-end residential interior and architectural design projects, including renovations and new builds.
We are seeking candidates who possess a minimum of 7 years of experience in the high-end luxury residential
design field, who are passionate about design, savvy in communicating with clients, and who will be organized,
and collaborative with our tight-knit studio team. The ideal candidate must be committed to excellence and
have an extreme attention to detail, project deadlines, and scheduled production milestones. They will be able
to multitask across multiple projects, and have excellent follow up skills. We value a positive can-do solutions-
minded demeanor with a strong sense of urgency, a solid work ethic and a commitment to delivering an
exceptional final product. The Freelance Senior Designer will work report directly to the Design Director with
creative input from the Principal, and have the support of the design team in overseeing and managing
multiple full scale project assets and tasks, from concept to final project close-out. This position may oversee
one or several projects simultaneously depending on studio volume.
While it is ideal that candidates are located in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, we open to exploring remote
designers based upon experience level. Before applying, please ensure that you can commit to a Monday-
Friday 9am-5pm MST time zone schedule, whether in-person or remote.
RESPONSIBILITIES
● Ability to evaluate and review client submitted precedent inspiration imagery and communication, to form
early design conception that speaks to both client-communicated project goals and maintains alignment
with the Modern Nest signature design aesthetic.
● Highly Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Rhino (this position requires fluency and excellence in drafting
and architectural redline standards), Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat. Illustrator is a plus),
Excel/Google Sheets/Google Drive. Perspective hand-sketching skills are a bonus.
● Experienced in assembling detailed project construction and furniture budgets with an ability to remain in
budget and knowledgeable of item, material and furniture specifications that speak to a range of budget
tiers.
● Experience with producing sophisticated project assets illustrating design intent including elevated and
scaled Design Boards reflecting real-time structural site conditions, with rendered material, finish, lighting
and furniture specifications integrated.
● With the support of the junior and assistant design team, oversee the assembly of floor plans and
elevations, material, finish, and hardware schedules, construction and furniture budgets, and furniture spec
books.
● Source and select all decorative items, including furniture, fabrics, finishes, accessories, etc.
● Coordinate with consultants, contractors, fabricators, and vendors to meet project objectives and deadlines.
Ability to draft shop drawings for custom pieces. Ability to audit and redline documents.
● Provide project team coordination for construction schedules, specifications, and material procurement.
● Maintain continual communication with Principal and Design Director regarding project statuses, and have
the ability to craft detailed project updates for reporting in weekly team meetings.
● Ability to work with junior team in a manner that is both collaborative and mentoring.
● Must have the ability to multitask and work on multiple projects simultaneously. At any time this role may
may manage 1-4 project in various phases.
● When applicable, oversee furniture installation of projects.
● Manage project communication internally and with clients, vendors, etc.
● Coordinate and attend client meetings, whether via Zoom or in-person.
● Able to quickly reference existing project documentation when confronted with a real-time question
from the construction field.
● Experience in small decor styling and accessorizing.
● Strong positivity and willingness to pitch in and help across all project tasks, particularly during
installations lead by other Senior Designers, as necessary.
● At the senior level we are expecting the candidate to possess a strong interest and knowledge of the
Interior Design and Architecture industries that extends beyond the workplace, including the regular
reading of industry publications, following of unique design resources on social, attending design
events, and generally maintaining a curiosity that is inspired and motivated. Bonus if you’re
knowledgeable of unique and specialized furniture, lighting, and textile fabricators in addition to big
box resources.
● Have the ability to think and contribute creatively and intelligently. Critically anticipate problems
before they arrive, while maintaining a solutions based mindset focused on workarounds during
challenging moments.
● Ability to work within a team and proactively create harmonious and professional relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS
● Degree in Interior Architecture, Interior Design or relatable discipline and at least 7 years professional
studio experience working at established design studios focused on luxury residential projects or
similarly detailed and custom interior design project work.
● Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Rhino (this position requires fluency and excellence in
drafting), Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign + Illustrator is a plus), Excel/ Google Sheets/Google Drive.
● Encyclopedic knowledge of architectural and design principles, measurement standards, and
material characteristics as well as an advanced level understanding of hard and soft materials,
finishes, paint, lighting, cabinetry and millwork profiles, and textiles.
● Sophisticated interpersonal and communication skills when interfacing internally and with clients.
Excellent written and verbal skills that reflect design and architecture acumen, with the ability to
communicate in a professional and polished manner.
● Design aesthetic alignment with Modern Nest Brand.
